Wholesale power sets new record in June, dropping to lowest monthly level in 12 years

July 15, 2015

Mild weather, low demand, and the lowest average natural gas price since 2003 brought June’s wholesale power price to under $20 per megawatt-hour, by far the lowest monthly price in the 12 years New England has had competitive power markets in their current form. June’s average real-time electric energy price of $19.61/MWh was nearly half the June 2014 average price of $37.92/MWh and nearly 23% lower than the previous record-low average monthly price of $25.39/MWh, recorded during March 2012.

ISO-NE releases discussion paper on the role of the capacity market in ensuring a reliable, renewable energy future

June 30, 2015

On June 3, 2015, ISO New England released a draft of a discussion paper, detailing the interdependency between the energy and capacity markets and explains how these markets will respond to increasing levels of renewable resources. Among other things, the paper explains how renewable resources are expected to put downward pressure on energy-market prices which, in turn, puts upward pressure on capacity-market prices. As the energy market provides fewer opportunities for resources to recover their fixed costs, the capacity market will play a key role in balancing the revenue needs of existing resources to ensure reliability is maintained.

ISO-NE updates real-time fuel mix chart on iso-ne.com, ISO to Go, with enhanced market offer data

Better represents fuels being used by dual-fuel power plants

With the launch of the Energy Market Offer Flexibility Project during December 2014, dual-fuel generators are now able to submit supply offers that specify the percentage of each fuel they plan to use during the upcoming hour—called “blended offers.” Blended offers provide a more accurate representation of the amounts of electricity generated by each type of fuel in New England. The ISO updated its real-time fuel mix chart (available on the iso-ne.com homepage, in ISO Express, and in the ISO to Go mobile app), its Daily Generation by Fuel Type report, and other market reports to reflect this enhanced data.
